The Current Condition (quality) of Indonesia Teachers
Teachers are the key actors in education.
A good teacher is a person who has
ability or competency
that can be given
to the students. Teacher is a person who has a position
that is very important
for the development of all
potential learners, and to be the most decisive
in the design and preparation of the process of education and learning
in the classroom. In addition, teachers
are also the most decisive in the classroom setting and control
students, assess the results achieved education and
student learning.
In terms
of quantity, the number of teachers
in Indonesia is quite adequate. But, in general, the distribution and quality
are still low. It can be proved
that many teachers are not
graduates, but they teach in
high schools and vocational schools, as
well as the number of teachers who
do not teach based
on their disciplines. This
situation is quite alarming with a percentage of more than 50% in Indonesia.
Most teachers in Indonesia
are even declared unfit to teach.
Feasibility of teaching is related to the level of teacher education itself. According to data from Research and Education
Ministry in 2010, it is said that there were approximately
1.2 million elementary
school teachers that only 13.8%
were educated diploma
education (DII). 38.8%
of 680,000 teachers of junior
high school were only graduated from
new educational DIII.
57.8% of 337.503 new
teachers at senior high school were S1. At
the higher education level
of 181.544 lecturers,
there were only 18.86% who got S2
and only 3.48%
got S3.
Sanusi (2007: 11) said that teachers
are not reliable in various aspects of the performance
standard, because he does not have: the contents of expertise in the
field of study, pedagogical,
didactic, and methodical,
personal and social
skills, especially disciplined and motivated,
work team among
fellow teachers and other education personnel. Besides, the issue of qualifications
must be met by the teacher while other issues are the responsibility of the government is not like a teacher in teaching learners.
According to Lutfi (2014), Kompas (11/04/2009) stated that it was
consistent with the data from the
secretary of BNSP by which rationally
a number of primary school teachers
were not available to teach, namely 609.217 people or about 49.3 % of
all educators in Indonesia.”
It is
supposed to be one
of the focuses of improving the
education system in Indonesia,
given its more developed a country stems from quality
education, quality education geared
to the learning quality, quality learning starts from qualified teachers as well. The government especially the
Ministry of Education should
be responsible to ensure welfare of the teachers because the teacher performance will impossibly be good
if their welfare is
not guaranteed. Welfare is not only financial
to meet the cost
of living, but also in terms of the
academic teachers.
